The city of Canterbury is less than 10 miles away from Knowlton. Its iconic cathedral is one of the most famous Christian structures
in England and this, together Canterbury's historic architecture, winding lanes and cobbled streets is a highlight of any visit.
There is an abundance of wonderful High Street and designer shopping, high-quality restaurants and lively bars. The Marlowe Theatre
brings the best of West End and independent theatre to life; the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge holds regular showcase exhibitions
in addition to its permanent exhibitions, which showcases the cultural contributions of East Kent. There is also the Canterbury Tales,
a museum which brings to life the oft-bawdy work of Chaucer, the Canterbury Roman Museum, home to the UK's only remaining in-situ
Roman pavement mosaic and Scheduled Ancient Monument.
A GATEWAY TO EUROPE
Why not bring your passports to Knowlton and head to France for the day? You can take your car via Eurotunnel, with up to four departures an
hour from its terminal at Folkestone (30mins); cross-channel ferries run via Dover (20 mins) every 30 minutes.
A short hop across the channel await the towns of Calais, Boulogne and Dunkerque. Steeped in history, the Opal Coast is a delight to visit. The
many restaurants and markets offer the opportunity to sample local cuisine and tasty treats, and the hypermarkets offer an opportunity to
stock up on beer and wines.
There are many World War I memorials and cemeteries which provide space for reflection and the Battlefields at Ypres are approximately
90 minutes from Calais are a must-visit.
The Nausicaa Ocean Visitor Centre is situated right beside the beach at Boulogne and is full of marine wonders to delight any age.
SHOPPING
Even more shopping can be found at Westwood Cross (25 mins) and the renowned McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in Ashford (45mins).
Westfield at London Stratford (not to mention the outstanding Olympic Park!) and Bluewater shopping centres are within reach by
rail in under 50minutes.
There are also lovely farmers' markets, farm shops, butchers and country stores aplenty in the nearby towns of Deal (25 mins),
Faversham (30mins) and Margate (45mins).
